YOUTH Programmes
YMCA takes pride in being able to offer opportunities for youth in our community to build strong self-worth, a sense of belonging and have a whole heap of fun along the way. Youth Programmes at the YMCA range between education, recreation, mentoring and internships. We provide ongoing help and support through various programmes like ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION for those who don’t fit mainstream Education curriculum, YOUTH GUARENTEE provides tertiary study options for 16-17 year old to support learners in developing their own pathways towards future work and careers, and help educators meet the needs of their students, we also offer placement in our ADULT NUMERACY & LITERACY programmes for those transitioning to higher education.
Alternative Education
Alt Ed is an extension of Lytton High School and we work closely with Ritana to ensure that students referred to Alt Ed,are provided with quality foundational education.
In our programme, students will be challenged to develop all aspects of their wellbeing through a range of lessons and activities that give them opportunity to step out of their day to day routine, and grow into self- assured young people that have positive direction for their future.
What we offer
- Quality educational programming for ages 13-16 years, no longer in school or those who are at risk of being excluded from education.
- A small classroom capacity that allows effective one on one student/teacher time
- Specifically designed learning programs that develop fitness, health and well being(bootcamps, Sports, Fitness Centre)
- Access to a computer suite to further emphasise learning ability.
- Resourses that promote learning within the local environment(surfboards, wetsuits,kayaks)

Alt Ed operates from our main YMCA Gisborne 150 Roebuck Road, Gisborne
When
Monday-Friday 8:30-3pm excluding stats and school holidays.
How do I enrol
Students in Alternative Education are referred to the YMCA Gisborne by our managing school, Lytton High School.
Whanau are welcome to come in to the YMCA and find out more about our programme and discuss the options available with our friendly experienced staff.

Youth Guarentee
Youth Guarantee (Y-G) is for 16-17 year olds looking to transition into tertiary study opportunities and aims to support learners in developing their own pathways towards future work and careers, and help educators meet the needs of their students.
Skills For You/Te Papa Ako Toi is a YMCA programme where you will get to orgnaise, interpret and communicate information using basic literacy and numeracy skills relevant to achieving personal and professional career goals
This course is FEES FREE and easy to register.
Intentive Literacy & Numeracy
Up skill and Build Career Pathways today
ILN is a FREE part time YMCA Intensive Literacy and Numeracy programme for learners seeking to raise their literacy, numeracy and digital technology skills, for ages 16 and over.
Our programme includes budgeting, personal development, future planning and career pathway and provides individual and group learning opportunities to meet your literacy and numeracy strengths and interests .
It has been developed to ensure you experience an environment where we all grow as component and confident learners and communicators, healthy in mind, body and spirit, secure in our sense of belonging and in the knowledge that we make a valued contribution to society.

Our qualified Adult Literacy Educator has vaste knowledge and skills to support students to grow as individuals and gain confidence and skills to take on new challenges in life and gain employment.

Career Pathways operates Monday and Friday 9:00am-3:00pm excluding Statutory Holidays and between Christmas and New Years.
Cost
Career Pathways is a FEE FREE course for anyone over the age of 16 with low or no qualifications
